David Childs - Solo Euphonium

In David's relatively short career to date he has already done more for the promotion of the euphonium as a solo instrument than any of his contempories.

His accolades in the banding world are varied and numerous, including winning the European, British Open, National and All England Masters Brass Band Championships.

He has also been named International Euphonium Player of the year, won the coveted Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and has made several solo CD recordings. At the 2004 European Championships, David was judged to be the outstanding musician.

His most recent successes however have been in a more classical vein. He has commissioned and premiered over five solo works for Euphonium and has recieved concerto performances with the World's finest orchestras in the most prestigious venues. In September, 2004, David will premiere a major new work by Wales' leading composer, Alun Hoddinott at the BBC Proms.

Although David is becoming increasingly busy with his solo engagements, which frequently include extended tours, he is a dedicated bandsman and is proud to play Solo Euphonium with his Dad and sister in the BAYV Cory Band.

Susan Thomas - 1st Baritone

Susan started playing cornet at the age of 8 in the local school under the guidance of Mr Richard Nash. She joined Hymac Band in 1977 on 3rd cornet then moving on to 2nd Horn and stayed with the band until the band folded in 1981.

She was a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Wales from 1985-'89, sharing the Solo Horn stand with former Cory Solo Horn Mike Thorne.

Susan then joined BTM Band under the baton of Mr James Gourlay, changing from Horn to 2nd Baritone, as it was the only vacancy in the band at the time! Susan discovered that she was more suited to the Tenor range of the instrument and quick progress resulted in a move onto 1st Baritone.

1990 saw an interlude spent in New Zealand, the highlights of which were soundly thrashing husband Chris in a solo contest and winning a prize in their National Solo Championships. In 1996 Susan joined the Tredegar Band, becoming their Player of the Year in 1999. She remained there until her move to Cory in July 2000 (just in time for the Double!)

Susan is married to Christopher on Solo Trombone and together they have three children; Daniel (13), Nia (10) and Owen (4).

Susan likes to holiday with the family at every opportunity and has taken to the role of 'Household DIY Enthusiast' like a natural!
